Field Marshal - The highest rank in the Army is that of Field Marshal. This position is given as honor to any officer. If an officer performs the highest performance in war or any major operation, it is awarded. So far in history, this rank has been given to only two officers, the names of KM Cariappa and Sam Manekshaw are included in it. On the uniforms of these officers, Ashoka Pillar and a lotus wreath are covered in saber cross. Now this title is not given to anyone.
General- At present, it is the highest rank of the Indian Army and is also called the Commander-in-Chief. The uniform of the officer of the General rank bears an Ashoka Pillar with a crossed baton, saber and a star. These officers are appointed for three years and retire by the age of 62 years.
Lieutenant General- On the Lieutenant General's uniform, Ashoka is in baton and saber cross with pillar. Officers are appointed to this post by the Commissioned Service and the retirement age limit has been fixed at 60 years.
Major General - Lieutenant General is followed by the rank of Major General. The rank of Major General is equivalent to the rank of Rear Admiral of the Navy and AVM of the Air Force in the Indian Army. The post of Major General is also appointed on the basis of commissioned service and for these, retirement has been fixed till the age of 58 years. On the Major General's uniform, there is a star and saber cross.
Brigadier- After the Major General comes the rank of Brigadier. He is the head of a brigade and this post is also appointed on the basis of commissioned service. The brigadier's uniform bears three stars and an Ashoka Pillar. The age limit for retirement has been fixed at 58 years.
Colonel - The post of Colonel is appointed on the basis of commissioned service. The officer of this post has two stars and an Ashoka Pillar on his uniform. These officers retire till the age of 54 years.
Lieutenant Colonel - It is mandatory to serve 13 years to get this rank. The officer of this rank has an Ashoka Pillar and a star on his uniform.
Major- Lieutenant Colonel is followed by Major Rank Officers. His uniform is fitted with an Ashoka Pillar. Apart from this, promotion can also be done after 2 years of service to the post of Major.
Captain- After 2 years of working as a commissioned officer in the army, he is promoted to the rank of Captain. There are three stars on the Captain's uniform.
Lieutenant - This is the initial commissioned rank in the Indian Army. After training in academies like IMA, OTA (Officers Training Academy), the pass outs go to the rank of young lieutenant. Lieutenant's uniform has two stars
Quarter Master Havildar - His uniform bears the mark of Ashoka Pillar and three rank chevrons (three striped stripe).
Havildar - The Havildar uniform has a mark of three rank chevrons (three striped stripe). His retirement age has been fixed at 49 years or 26 years of service (whichever is earlier).
Rank of junior commissioned officers
Subedar Major - Ashoka Pillar and strip (patti) are kept on the uniform of Subedar Major or Risaldar Major. His retirement age is 54 years or 34 years of service (whichever is earlier).
Subedar - On the uniform of Subedar or Risaldar there are two, five-pointed stars and strips. Their retirement age is 52 years or 30 years of service, whichever is earlier).
Naib Subedar - A five-pointed star and stripe are worn on the uniform of Naib Subedar or Naib Risaldar. His retirement age is set to be 52 years or 28 years of service (whichever is earlier).
Nayak - The hero's uniform has a mark of two rank chevrons (two striped stripe). His retirement age is fixed at 49 years or 24 years of service (whichever is earlier).
Lance Nayak - On the uniform of Lance Nayak there is a mark of a rank chevron (a striped stripe). His retirement age is set to be 48 years or 22 years of service (whichever is earlier).
Soldier - There is no mark on the soldier's uniform. The retirement age of the soldier has been fixed at 42 years or 19 years of service.
