As a result of the increasing population and medical facilities, the number of elderly is increasing at a rapid pace which is natural, but the problem is that the incidence of abuse of these elderly people is also increasing which is considerable.
In view of the same problems of the elderly and to create awareness among the people, the United Nations started celebrating "Elder Abuse Prevention Day" on June 15 under Proposition 66/127 in 2006 on the advice of the International Elder Abuse Prevention Association.
Abuse of the elderly is a human rights issue. In 2017 'Helpage India' CEO 'Mathew Cherian' says that - 'The statistics startled me. Abuse of the elderly is a sensitive issue.
For the past few years, we have been studying the abuse of elders behind closed doors of homes, but when we have accused them of abuse in public places, that is also worth considering.
According to a study conducted by WHO in the year 2017, an estimated 15.7% of the elderly over 60 years of age in the whole world, i.e. one in every 6 elderly in the world were abused. Estimated abuse in the community such as psychological abuse was 11.6%, financial abuse 6.8%, neglect 4.2%, physical abuse 2.6% and sexual abuse 0.9%.
This air of neglect and disdain for the elderly has corrupted not only the cities but also the atmosphere of the villages. The changing social values under consumerist culture, change in thinking of new generation, and limited definition of family have created many problems for the elderly.
According to the survey, 21.38 percent of the elderly are living alone in the village while 25.3 percent of the elderly are living alone in the cities. About a quarter of the people believe that they feel frustrated and frustrated in caring for the elderly and 29 percent of the people keep the elderly in the house
